| |
NOTE: The Occupational Medicine Residency Program is CLOSED as of July 31, 2008.
PURPOSE:
The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program trains physicians for full
time careers in Occupational Medicine. The importance of prevention in the practice of the
specialty is emphasized. Graduates of the program are prepared for, and have entered practice
in academic, corporate, government, military, private practice and hospital-based settings.
PROGRAM -ACADEMIC:
The residency program consists of two distinct but closely related years of training. The academic year (PGY2) consists of courses in subject areas that form a basis for the practicum year (PGY3) experience and for practice in the specialty. This course of study leads to a MPH degree in Occupational and Environmental Medicine from the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Graduate School of Public Health. Degree requirements established by the Graduate School of Public Health include a minimum of 42 credit hours of required and elective courses, preparation and defenses of a thesis, usually based on a research project or comprehensive literature review of a selected topic. The academic program is supplemented with practical experience in our Occupational Medicine referral clinics.
PROGRAM -PRACTICUM:
The practicum year (PGY3) enjoys strong support and commitment of local medical directors who hold faculty appointments in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health in the Graduate School of Public Health and serve as practicum rotation preceptors. This segment of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency training program includes rotation experiences at Allegheny County Health Department. Bayer Corporation,Pittsburgh Area OSHA Office, Washington County Occupational Medicine Center, UPMC Work Partners, Concentra, and U.S. Steel Corporation, etc.
Throughout the academic and practicum years, residents participate in a variety of scheduled enrichment activities. These include journal clubs, seminars local and regional occupational medicine, toxicology meetings, medical grand rounds, and other programs in general medicine, dermatology, pulmonary medicine, or orthopedics. These activities provide continuity and integration for the program and encourage interaction between residents and practitioners in related fields.
PROGRAM-ELIGIBILITY:
All applicants must have completed with a C or better, 3 college credits of algebra or higher level math and 3 college credits of human biology. Applicants must possess a graduate degree from an acceptable institution in a discipline relevant to public health; or a U.S. bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or the equivalent degree from a foreign school and substantial knowledge in a discipline relevant to public health, either through study or experience or a combination of these. Scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) must be submitted by applicants who do not have a previously earned master's or doctoral degree. Applicants shall have completed all courses listed on the Course Prerequisite Form. A department may also require submission of GRE scores by an applicant. In some cases, results of the GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, or DAT may be submitted.
The minimum qualification for applicants seeking admission to the Occupational Medicine Residency Program is an earned M.D. (or equivalent) and successful completion of PGY1 in an accredited U.S. or Canadian Program and proof of current medical license in any state at the time of application.
PROGRAM-APPLICATION:
Applications must be made on the enclosed application form. For academic purposes, residents will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Public Health in a program leading to the Masters of Public Health in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and must complete an application for this school.
Each applicant will be required to submit an academic curriculum vitae, transcripts of graduate and undergraduate work, three letters of recommendation from physicians familiar with the candidates' academic record and work experience, and a personal statement summarizing the applicant's career goals and interests. Test scores, such as the National Board of Medical Examiners (or FLEX), will be considered, when available, as useful additional material in the evaluation of applicants. Applicants will be notified of selection decisions (a personal interview may be required). The Program Executive Committee will give equal consideration to all qualified applicants. |
