Risk Assessment, a process developed by the National Academy of Sciences, informs the approach to many current environmental-health-related studies and to the governmental policies that follow. From evaluating “brownfields”, to remediating nuclear weapons development sites, to assessing the health impact of local air pollution exposure, the process of Risk Assessment and the subsequent activities of Risk Communication and Risk Management are effectively applied to describe the human health risk due to a hazardous situation, to share with “stakeholders” the nature and scope of the problem, and to mitigate the health impact of the environmental exposure in question. Risk Assessment has become one of the most important approaches for identifying and addressing environmental health problems.

The Environmental and Occupational Health Risk Assessment Certificate Program provides concentrated graduate education in this well-defined area of environmental health. By means of highly focused course work, the objective of the program is to impart proficiency in the risk sciences to individuals who desire positions involving risk assessment strategies or already have such positions and are seeking to strengthen their professional competency. In particular, individuals who are members of the following groups may have interest in this program:

  • public and private sector professionals who evaluate scientific data in the context of risk
    assessment and management;

  • health and safety professionals who need to acquire or strengthen training in the risk sciences;

  • environmental scientists, engineers, and policy analysts;

  • occupational physicians.

A student completing the 15 credits of coursework in the Risk Assessment Certificate Program will achieve the following competencies:

  • know the processes and pathways of environmental exposures and how they reach human populations;

  • comprehend the impact of the environment on human health and how it is manifested at the organic level and at the cellular level;

  • integrate information from the above into the process of risk assessment to determine science-based risk estimates from the relationship between exposure and disease response;

  • understand the role of environmental law in directing risk assessment activities and using risk assessment information.
