The M.S./Ph.D. program in Molecular Toxicology provides theoretical and practical education for individuals who desire positions in academic, industrial or government laboratories as teachers and/or researchers in the cellular and molecular basis for the adverse effects of environmental agents on biological systems. The Ph.D. program is designed as an integrated modern curriculum combining the classical toxicological disciplines traditional to the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health with the new and continually developing techniques of cellular and molecular biology. It emphasizes a strong underpinning in basic principles of cellular and molecular biology, and application of these basic principles towards the understanding mechanisms of toxicity mediated by environmental agents. The program provides an understanding of how laboratory based model systems can be interpreted and applied to the study of exposed and potentially exposed human populations.
While the program's resources are dedicated to the thematic teaching and laboratory research focus centered on training at the doctoral (Ph.D.) level, the department will actively recruit and enroll M.S. students, the emphasis for which will be directed towards the theoretical underpinning in Molecular Toxicology with more limited involvement in laboratory-based research. The M.S. may also be awarded as a terminal degree to students who do not complete the doctoral program.
A student completing the M.S./Ph.D. requirements will be able to:
Develop a basic theoretical background in cell and molecular biology.
Gain an understanding of the principles that govern the exposure and subsequent effects of chemicals on humans and their application to public health.
Understand cellular and molecular mechanisms by which environmental agents mediate their toxic effects on cells and organisms.
Develop skills for the critical reading of the scientific literature, development of testable hypotheses, experimental design, data interpretation.
Students completing the core curriculum and progressing to the Ph.D. will be required to conduct original research within the laboratory of a faculty member within the Molecular Toxicology Training Program.
